Last day of the project. Three things left to complete:
1. Secure tops of lattice to frame with more cedar lumber (following the patio slope caused the frame to be skewed and opened a gap between lattice and frame.
2. Strengthen the middle area of the frames with split 2×4’s attached horizontally. Rather, then spacing the 2×4s evenly to create 3 smaller frames, I spaced them asymmetrically. I wanted to draw the eye below the sight line.
3. Attach slats. They are mainly decorative but could also be used to support vines that make it to the top of the screen in the future. And finally, in the mornings they will cast a funky shadow pattern. |

We finally have one post standing by itself. I back-filled the hole with some dug up soil and gravel for more support. Yeah, that’s one good looking post. |
It’s time to mark the drill holes of the adjacent post. |
After drilling 4 holes in concrete I hammered in some wedge bolts. I used steel bases to support the 10 foot posts. After tightening all bolts the post is basically level. |
Once this is done, work on the first lattice frame can begin. |
After some sweating and swearing the fist lattice frame is in position. I am starting to visualize the end product. |
The work on securing additional post supports continues… |
The second lattice frame is built and installed. This one was a bit tricky because of the slope of the concrete patio. Don’t assume that lattice frames are to be level. I followed the grade of the patio. Lesson learned: Insert the frames between the post. You can temporarily attach them with a screw on one side. Adjust the slope of the frame top (you may have to remove the screw for this). Once the position is final, screw the frame on both side to the posts. |
